DICTIONARY = BIBLE
Make the dictionary your bible! If your spelling competition is nearing, make sure you have gone through each and every page of the dictionary because it can do wonders to increase your spelling skills.
If are not sure about the spelling of a certain word make sure to get the definition, the usage in a sentence and the language of origin of the word. The definition can be particularly helpful if the word has a homophone. The usage gives a better understanding of the structure of the word.
Which dictionary is the best?
Shikha recommends every dictionary you can get your hands on! Of course, it should be more than 500 pages but don’t stick to one dictionary because the vast ocean of spellings, can never be contained in one book!
PART OF SPEECH
Second hack to help you with your vocabulary is the part of speech! The part of speech is the type of the word that you are going to spell. There are different parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. It is an underestimated help in your competition. Say for example, the words you want to spell an adverb, so you can be sure that it must end with an ‘ly’ rather than an ‘ley’ or an ‘lee’. And if it’s a verb, you can count on it to be ended with an ‘ing’ most of the times, no matter how weird it sounds.
ONLINE SPELLING LISTS
The third way for you to increase your vocabulary is to go through spelling lists online. After the dictionary, make sure you read through a lot of lists from the internet. Start off easy and then go to the real deal. If you can spell atleast 70% of the words, only then go on to the tougher part! If not, go back to the dictionary and learn it again!
